Book Recommendation : Equal Rites

"The last thing the wizard Drum Billet did, before Death laid a bony hand on his shoulder, was to pass on his staff of power to the eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately for his colleagues in the chauvinistic (not to say misogynistic) world of magic, he failed to check on the new-born baby's sex..."

I first read this book when I was about fourteen, having exhausted all of the books on my own book shelf and raiding my fathers. This was the first Terry Pratchett book I ever read and it became, not only my favourite Pratchett book, but my favourite book in general. I did later have to buy my own copy as I read my fathers so much all the pages fell out.
The story follows a young girl, thrown into a world of magic deemed to be the wrong king for her gender, as she sets of in search for education. The story features one of my favourite characters, Granny Weatherwax. An old witch who holds no punches and tells everyone exactly what she thinks. It is beautifully written and I'd encourage anyone who hasn't read it before, to read it.
